If you have a HDTV, you really need to do few basics to ensure that you will get the best picture.
Rule 1: Get HD content.  You can get HD from cable, off air or satellite.  If you try to watch standard Def video on a HDTV, it actually looks horrible.  However, watching try HD is quite an amazing improvement.

Rule 2: Update your old DVD players to a Blu Ray and connect using a digital cable like HDMI. This ensures that you will get the best picture quality.

My setup is typical and I am getting much better picture on my HDTV:

Cable Digital Settop box
Blu Ray Player BDP1500
Apple TV ( not much HD on itunes yet, but will soon)
PC with HDMI vid card.
HDMI switch to connect the HD sources to the HDTV.
Plasma HDTV

I still primarily use a component (RBG) switch box.  My hdmi's on the back of my tv go to my satellite box and my upconvert dvd player.  My components go to my 360, ps2, and a backup for the tv in case I'm lazy to change it from av3 to hdmi1 Smiley.  It works pretty well since I only have two hdmi devices but eventually I'll need to upgrade my receiver and switchbox.
