Title: DVD Tuesday
Post by: Beckmen on Mar 18, 2008, 01:29:09 PM
DVDs and BDs are released every week on tuesday, as we all know. This thread is to keep us reminded of what is coming out on any given week, and to discuss what we will be renting, buying or both. I expect you people to pick up the slack if I neglect to post on any given week!

This thread should be not only a forum for discussion, but also a valuable tool. It's really easy to forget about a title and miss out on it altogether. Then months down the road you see it and you're like "Oh, that's out? I wonder what else I missed out on...". Happens to me all the time, and I'd like to avoid it in the future.

This week:

I am Legend
Enchanted
Atonement
The Seeker - The Dark is Rising
Southland Tales
Love in the Time of Cholera

Battlestar Galactica: Season Three
Bionic Woman: Volume I (IE, The Complete Series, I think)
Married With Children - The Complete Eighth Season
Greek - Chapter One
Adventures of Robin Hood - Complete First Season
Life After People (History Channel)
The Untouchables - Season Two, Vol. 1
McHale's Navy: Season Three

...

OK, anybody know of a site that just lists the damned new releases? And doesn't include re-shipments of catalog titles and other shit that makes the list a mile long? 288 titles are coming up on amazon for me.

Anyway, the only title this week I am buying is BSG: Season Three. Would have gotten I Am Legend if it wasn't a huge rip off. Renting Southland Tales and Revolver. Might rent I Am Legend someday, or put it on my ever-growing "pick up when I find it for cheap" list.

Nothing for me this week.  I used to flip through the DVDA new releases on occasion.

Now that I have a BD player, I'm still going to be getting SD releases unless it's a MUST for the 1080p experience.  My friend donated two BD titles for me to try out, so we'll see if it's really enough of a difference to start replacing some of my existing titles.  I doubt it, though.  Maybe the BD of Life Of Brian might be my first actual purchase.

Ever heard of a site called UpcomingDiscs.com ;)

I write a New Release Tuesday blog every week to announce the weeks discs hitting the streets:

I'd might add Atonement to my Amazon wish list.

The more I thought about I Am Legend, the more I didn't like it all that much.

Wow, The Ice Storm: Criterion! I didn't even know this existed. Tempting, but 30 bucks for a movie I'd probably give 7/10 or 8/10...with 5 and 3-dollar DVD bins, that's too tough of a pill to swallow these days.

I loved I am Legend, until they screwed the ending something fierce.  I figured it would be a good one on HD, so I preordered the HD-DVD through amazon.

From what I hear of the alternate ending...it sucks. I prefer the theatrical ending.

I was going to mention the Tuesday blog, but I figured it wasn't enough titles for him.

I have my fingers crossed that the last few HD-DVD titles listed actually make it to store shelves. It's a real pissoff that they release them WEEKS after the SD and BD versions... bastards.

I agree.  I mean I understand delaying it maybe a week to lessen customer confusion but I Am Legend releases this week on DVD and BD and......April 18 for HD? What?

Not a whole lot this week. The Mist is at the top of my list, but I am also renting Wristcutters. Not seeing anything else on the list than interests me in the slightest. Good week to play some much-needed catch-up, perhaps.

The Mist I really want to see, and hopefully will get it soon, as its on Short Wait right now.
How about The Kite Runner.....isn't that supposed to be pretty good?

Yeah, it's supposed to. The trailer didn't really sway me, though.

Damned forum. Your reply didn't come up when I hit 'recent unread topics'. It always pulls this with me, glitchy piece of SHITE!

For people who didn't read the book, The Kite Runner might be enjoyable. I read the book and enjoyed it, but the movie moved too fast for me. It was like it had a checklist of scenes from the book to bring to the screen, checked off each one and moved on. It failed to exist in any of the scenes and create its own feeling, but it was still a good movie.

Sweeney Todd should be in my mailbox today.  I've been really wanting to see it, unfortunately, its got a steep hill to climb to impress me, as I tend to hate musicals.

Resurrecting and Champ and Reservation Road look to be the only ones out this week that I give a damn about. Neither are very high priority, either.

This week, AVP-R: Unrated is at the top of my list for rentals. I would be buying it if we got the deleted scenes like they did in other parts of the world, but since we are not, I am boycotting it. Watching it right now. It's such a bad movie, with such terrible cinematography. I think this dark, murky, contrasty filth is even worse than shaky-cam. I can't see a God damned thing.

Also rented Before the Devil Knows Your Dead, and have Juno, ITNOTK: A Dungeon Siege Tale (the trailer on the AVP-R DVD made me decide I want to see it) and Lars and the Real Girl at the top of my queue. Of course, never did get around to those two from the week before last or whatever...damn it. I suck.

Got Devil and In the Name of the King coming from Netflix tomorrow.  Pumped for Devil, heard great things, and am entirely sure that I will loathe King.  I watch a lot of stuff purely out of curiosity and this is definitely one of them.  At least I know that whenever I make fun of Uwe Boll, I know that I am very knowledgable on the subject as I have unfortunately subjected myself to all of his films.

...so I guess in a way he's won.

Added to queue:

Charlie Wilson's War
The Savages
Cloverfield
Romulus, My Father

No purchases. Probably nothing coming out until Rambo. Even that, I may wait if they are releasing a Blu-Ray...

Got The Orphanage sitting here right now, just came out today and supposed to be really good.
Also, never heard of the Savages, but saw it on the first page of Rottentomatoes and saw PSH in it, so decided to queue it up.

Yeah, they shot it...or part of it...in Buffalo, about 45 minutes from where I live or something. It was kind of a big thing for Buffalonions, since that city is so one-horse.
